Born on this day in 1953, Sylvia was a Tribal Member and Blue Lake Rancheriaโs very first Chairperson following the Tribeโs federal reinstatement in 1983. Her leadership was instrumental in BLRโs reorganization, guiding efforts to rebuild its governance and strengthening its future.
Sylvia and her family descended from survivors of the 1860 Massacre on what is now known as Tuluwat Island, including her great-great-grandmother Nancy Roberts (Hitchcock), one of the few who escaped the tragedy. This deeply rooted history shaped her commitment to preserving the Tribeโs heritage and working toward a stronger future.
Family was at the center of Sylviaโs life, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her childrenโShiela, Johnnie, Carter and Abdulla. After marrying Kenneth Daniels in 1974, her world focused on fostering their happiness, growth, and well-being. As a deeply caring and attentive mother, she treasured every moment with her family, from celebrating milestones to embracing the simple joys of daily life. Summers held a special place in her heart, marked by memorable trips to Lewiston and Trinity Lake, camping adventures, laughter-filled days on the family ski boat, and countless cherished memories at their home in Blue Lake.
Sylviaโs nurturing spirit extended beyond her own family. As an emergency foster care provider, she exemplified kindness and compassion, offering stability and support to children in need. Her steadfast love and dedication to both her family and those she cared for have left a lasting legacy that will be forever cherished.
Sylvia found happiness in working with plants and ceramics, tending to her greenhouse, and cultivating her favorite flowersโposies. Her creativity and love for nature brought joy to all who knew her.
Today, we remember Sylvia for her leadership, kindness, and the enduring impact she made on our community. She will always be celebrated for her unwavering devotion to the Tribe and those she loved.
